The Training Subclass 407 Visa is an increasingly popular visa, whereby employees undergo training or professional development in Australia under an Employer sponsorship. The Training visa allows people to undertake occupational training in Australia to meet occupational registration or licensing requirements; to enhance skills in their occupation.

As part of the application process, submissions must be accompanied by an auditable Training Plan that clearly shows what training will be conducted during the 1 or 2 years of the visa. These training plans can be tricky to prepare, but The Business Plan Company has written many, so we present our top tips to help you write your plan.

Set the time aside.

407 training plans require lots of small details, often creating the need to create and review extra documents, so be ready to spend some time along the way as you prepare your plan.

Know the regulations.

There are specific regulations for 407 Training Visa in terms of minimum employment experience, current visas, hours and weeks of training needed. Make sure you know these before you write your training plan, to make sure it’s fully compliant. Migration agents know these regulations inside out, so use their knowledge during the planning process.

Set the scene.

The training plan should include a description of the business and also the nominated position, including duties and tasks, and explain how the position fits within the business. In particular, you must specify which eligible occupation the nominated position relates to and the ANZSCO code.

It’s about the Trainee, not your business.

Sometimes we see businesses that present the training as part of their growth plans, with details of how the Trainee will play a pivotal role in this growth. That may be the case, but the training plan is about building the skills of the Trainee, so needs to focus purely on that.

Show the need for training.

The 407 Training Plan needs to build a narrative around the real actual need for the Trainee to receive the training. By doing a skills assessment during the plan preparation, your plan must show where the need is for training, going back to the specific skills gaps.

Position Descriptions matter.

The skills presented in the training schedule have to be based on what the role actually requires, so go back to the Position Description to build on the skills assessment and training schedule. The Position Description needs to be thorough and accurate, so take time to prepare it before you get started on the training plan.

Training tasks.

In the training plan, it is important to detail the specific tasks or modules that the nominee will undertake during the training program. The tasks should be designed to increase in difficulty and complexity over time, allowing the nominee to progress and develop a higher level of skills.

Training Outcomes

The training plan should also clearly identify the outcomes that the nominee will achieve upon completion of the training program. These outcomes should be aligned with the objectives of the training and demonstrate the enhanced or additional skills the nominee will gain. Additionally, you can specify the tasks or duties the nominee will become competent in after completing the training. The specific outcomes will depend on the nature of the training program and the nominated position.
